The UK authorities has added eleven further destinations to its public warning list concerning the threats of industrial alcohol toxicity from tainted alcoholic drinks.
This revised travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a global increase in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of industrial alcohol toxicity.
Only a few weeks ago, the government had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, after a number of high-profile events like the tragic loss of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being advised that even minimal doses of industrial alcohol can lead to permanent eye damage or fatality within 12–48 hours.
Methanol is a toxic chemical often used in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. It is not meant for ingestion.
While it is naturally produced during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers bring it down to low, safe levels for ingestion through the purification method.
Yet in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into beverages to cut costs, and as it is tasteless and smell-free, it is very difficult to notice.
Foreign Office representative Hamish Falconer emphasized that all travellers should know the indicators of toxic alcohol toxicity.
"When you are having drinks abroad, opt for trusted places and avoid local brews or unspecified beverages," the minister advised.
"In case something seems unusual, like a headache that's far more intense than typical or sight issues – get medical help immediately."
The full register of nations listed as carrying a threat of toxic alcohol poisoning now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
