The French PM Resigns After Less Than a Month Amidst Widespread Criticism of New Government

The French political turmoil has intensified after the recently appointed premier unexpectedly quit within moments of appointing a government.

Quick Resignation During Political Instability

Sébastien Lecornu was the third French prime minister in a single year, as the nation continued to lurch from one parliamentary instability to another. He quit moments before his first cabinet meeting on the beginning of the workweek. The president accepted his resignation on the start of the day.

Strong Opposition Over New Cabinet

Lecornu had faced strong opposition from political opponents when he announced a recent administration that was largely similar since last previous month's dismissal of his predecessor, François Bayrou.

The announced cabinet was dominated by Macron's allies, leaving the government largely similar.

Rival Reaction

Rival groups said the prime minister had reversed on the "profound break" with previous policies that he had vowed when he came to power from the disliked previous leader, who was removed on the ninth of September over a proposed budget squeeze.

Future Political Course

The uncertainty now is whether the head of state will decide to dissolve parliament and call another sudden poll.

Marine Le Pen's political ally, the leader of the opposition figure's far-right National Rally party, said: "There cannot be a return to stability without a fresh vote and the parliament's termination."

He stated, "Evidently the president who chose this administration himself. He has failed to comprehend of the current circumstances we are in."

Election Calls

The National Rally has demanded another vote, confident they can increase their positions and role in parliament.

France has gone through a phase of uncertainty and parliamentary deadlock since the president called an unclear early vote last year. The assembly remains divided between the political factions: the progressive side, the conservative wing and the centre, with no absolute dominance.

Budget Pressure

A spending package for next year must be passed within coming days, even though parliamentary groups are at loggerheads and his leadership ended in under four weeks.

No-Confidence Vote

Political groups from the progressive side to far right were to hold discussions on Monday to decide whether or not to support to dismiss France's leader in a no-confidence vote, and it looked that the administration would fail before it had even started work. Lecornu reportedly decided to resign before he could be removed.

Cabinet Positions

Nearly all of the key cabinet roles announced on the night before remained the unchanged, including Gérald Darmanin as legal affairs leader and Rachida Dati as cultural affairs leader.

The position of economic policy head, which is crucial as a fragmented legislature struggles to pass a spending package, went to the president's supporter, a Macron ally who had previously served as business and power head at the beginning of Macron's second term.

Surprise Selection

In a unexpected decision, Bruno Le Maire, a presidential supporter who had worked as economy minister for an extended period of his presidency, came back to administration as military affairs head. This angered officials across the spectrum, who considered it a sign that there would be no questioning or alteration of the president's economic policies.
