Surprise as Government Supporters Take Over the Nation's Most-Read Daily Publication

Reporters at Hungary's most popular newspaper have shown disbelief after a media conglomerate considered aligned with nationalist prime minister Viktor Orbán's political faction, Fidesz, purchased the popular daily from its previous Swiss owners.

Timing of Acquisition

The acquisition, which occurs while Hungary approaches crucial elections next year, is largely considered another move to strengthen state control on the press.

A pro-Orbán media company, Indamedia, announced on Friday it had acquired a group of Hungarian media assets, including Glamour magazine and Blikk, a widely-read tabloid whose news site reaches about three million online readers monthly.

Leadership Shake-up

Blikk's departing chief editor, Ivan Zolt Nagy, announced on Monday that he and another key leader were exiting in "common understanding" with the new owner.

They had been hired seven months ago to restructure Blikk, "shifting from dramatic coverage but on engaging content" and to be "more audience-focused, addressing politics, economics, and culture," he stated on Facebook.

Staff Reactions

Employees of Blikk expressed being stunned. "I nearly experienced a heart attack when I was informed of the declaration," said one correspondent, who asked to stay unnamed. "Personally, this is professionally concerning."

Blikk has introduced a replacement top editor, Baláz Kolossváry.

Press Environment Issues

Numerous reporters who have opted to continue say they are in a difficult position as there are few other outlets remaining where they could apply.

Throughout the previous 15 years, Orbán has been able to use a widespread government-supporting press environment to strengthen his public perception and polls.

Political Timing

Whereas major media acquisitions have usually happened either post-election or during a calm political phase, the buyout of Ringier Hungary comes less than six months before April's general election.

Blikk was viewed as a key objective for Orbán and his political organization at a time when surveys are signalling that they have a serious opponent for the first time in exceeding a decade.

Political Rival Reaction

The rival candidate, Péter Magyar, whose Respect and Freedom party is running on promises to root out systemic graft, has been direct about Orbán's "propaganda factory" and the harm he claims it has done to Hungary's democratic system.

He has condemned the Ringier Hungary acquisition, declaring it represents another move by Orbán to strengthen his grip over Hungary's media outlets.

Newspaper's Significance

Though Blikk is a daily publication, known for its celebrity news and over-the-top headlines, in the recent years it has also published multiple stories on alleged corruption.

"This newspaper stands as by far the most read daily publication in Hungary, a market leader," said a press expert. "Its online site has become remarkably well-received in the past few years, becoming the fourth most popular website in Hungary. If propaganda appears in such widely read and popular media, it will have an influence on the public."

Global Perspective

For over a ten-year period, Hungary has served as a example for other "semi-democratic systems" internationally.

Ex-US administrators and their associates have long praised Orbán's Hungary even as it falls in journalistic liberty ratings.

In 2022, Orbán addressed a conference of US traditionalist groups that the path to power required "controlling media outlets."

Past Media Regulation

In 2010, Orbán's government approved a legislation that imposed official oversight over the main media regulator and placed the national media outlet in the control of allies.

Proprietorship Information

Indamedia is half-owned by Mikló Vaszily, a state-aligned entrepreneur who is also CEO of a pro-government private channel.

In a statement, Indamedia's second proprietor and CEO, Gábor Ziegler, said: "Via the purchase of Ringier Hungary, the group is gaining a successful media company of comparable scale to Indamedia, with strong market positions and successful brands that play a defining role in the Hungarian communications sector."

Ringier announced in a release that its choice to divest was "based solely on business strategy factors and our concentration on our main internet businesses in Hungary."

A state communicator was sought for statement.
