A national judicial panel brought charges against the New York attorney general over allegations of bank fraud on Thursday, according to someone with knowledge of the case.
The US attorney for the eastern district of Virginia handled the presentation of this case to the grand jury this Thursday, according to the source.
Federal prosecutors do not typically present to a grand jury.
Halligan was installed in the role the previous month after the president expressed dissatisfaction over the speed of inquiries involving adversaries.
This action is the president’s latest effort to leverage the Department of Justice to penalize opponents.
This occurs 14 days following Halligan obtained indictments targeting the former FBI director.
Career prosecutors prepared a memo regarding that situation explaining the reasons charges were not warranted.
Comey denied the charges recently.
